Ken Tucker is Right: Nasim Pedrad is Criminally Underutilized

The last few weeks of Saturday Night Live have been real bummers for those of us who have been looking forward to seeing more Nasim Pedrad. Nasim is virtually invisible (as are Abby Elliott and Jenny Slate). Meanwhile, Kristen Wiig dominates the program.

I'm not alone in that assessment. Over at Entertainment Weekly, Ken Tucker supplies a review of last night's SNL, making the same observation. Here's an excerpt of his nice blow-by-blow account of the program:

Butler had to compete for screen time not only with Bud Light, but also with Kristen Wiig, who seemed to be everywhere. Sketches would begin with one premise — say, Butler as an ad-agency rep coming up with ideas about how to make cottage cheese sexy — only to have Wiig enter and take over the sketch doing one of her 25 interchangeable nervously-awkward characters. I’m not saying Wiig isn’t talented; it’s just that she’s being stretched too thin. Couldn’t Abby Elliott, Jenny Slate, or Nasim Pedrad have been used more prominently to give her (and them) a break?

The answer to Ken's question is a big ol' YES!

Saturday Night Live, Tonight, October 10 -- Hoping for More Nasim Pedrad!

Can't wait for tonight's show. Hoping that we'll see a little more of Nasim front and center. She did well as the the Iranian Prez's wife last week, so there's definitely potential for MORE PEDRAD (a potential replacement for "more cowbell"?).

Tonight's host: Drew Barrymore.

I had to choose between a picture of her in tiny underwear and this little pj-style t-shirt and the shot of her in Firestarter. I went with the Firestarter option because the other one was just too hot to handle.

Nasim Pedrad & Kathy Griffin: Compare and Contrast

Many of you got your first look at Nasim Pedrad when she played Kathy Griffin a few weeks ago on the Thursday version of SNL.

I thought it might be nice to do a little compare and contrast. Let's take a look at the real Kathy Griffin and Nasim's portrayal of the D-lister.

The Kathy Griffin look, obviously, is the #2 shot in that 3-parter.

BuzzSugar ran one of the ubitquitious "SNL added to women to the lineup to replace Watkins and Wilson" articles. Nothing too cool about that. Just reportin' the news, like an entertainment site should.

Buried deep in the comments, however, a voice from Nasim Pedrad's past can be heard. It ain't much, but it's something. And it appears as if Nasim Pedrad has long had the kind of work ethic that may help her survive the tough grind of Saturday Night Live.

Yeah, seriously. That's it. I'm stretching for something to write today, huh?

Then again, it is about Nasim, so it counts.

Congratulations to President Barack Obama for winning this year's Nobel Peace Prize. Whether offered for past works or purely as an aspirational award, it's a great honor for the President and our nation.

The President's speech regarding the award displayed both humility, a solid understanding of the world's lofty expectations for him and the need for all of us to work together seriously to reduce bloodshed and violence throughout the world.

And to those who decided to use the occasion as yet another excuse to express their distaste for the President's politics... Yawn. We get it. You don't like him. That's not a good reason to be an a**hole.

Esquire Endorses Nasim Pedrad

A recent article in Esquire reveals that at least one of the guys over at the famed mag is thrilled that SNL added Jenny Slate and the one and only Nasim Pedrad.

Glad to know that others were as thrilled as I have been.

Here's an excerpt:

What's better is that these two rumored cast members-to-be are women. Just speaking practically, this'll mean more ideas, more characters, and more onstage partnerships. More opportunities for comedic genius to surface, in other words. Right now there's just one full-time cast member who doesn't pee standing up, Kristen Wiig — and she needs more time to cultivate the next Penelope rather than chugging away at an average of nearly six sketches per weekend.

We haven't seen enough of her on Saturday Night Live to have any great video clips. So, in the interim, here's a bit of Nasim Pedrad from her stint with the Groundlings. It's from a show called "El Rancho Advanco". Not the greatest thing since sliced bread in terms of content or presentation, but at this point beggars can't be choosers.

Early Reactions to Nasim Pedrad

There's not a lot you can say about Nasim Pedrad's first "real" Saturday Night Live appearance. She didn't do a great deal and was completely upstaged by the other newbie, Jenny Slate, who managed to make her presence known via a bit of FCC-baiting/f-bombing.

As noted at Hot Issues, "Slate's fellow SNL newcomer, Nasim Pedrad also debuted on SNL last night. She did not utter any expletives."

That about sums up the first night of SNL for Pedrad.
She didn't say "f**k."

She was a little busier on Thursday, introducing herself to the broadcast television world during SNL's Weekend Update spin-off. She showed off her impersonation of D-list actress (and possessor of a surprisingly hot bikini body--who knew?) Kathy Griffin.

Reaction to Nasim's Griffin seems to be positive. Here are two different comments indicative of how folks felt about her first shimmy into the SNL limelight.

Amy of Live from New York, It's Saturday Night says, "Also, I just have to mention how much I enjoyed Nasim Pedrad's impression of Kathy Griffin on SNL Weekend Update Thursday - girl's got game!"

The Comic's Comic notes, "...newcomer Nasim Pedrad checked in as Kathy Griffin (kudos on nailing her debut, although odd that the hair people didn't go for a bolder red?)"

So far, so good. Keep it up, Nasim.

Nasim Pedrad Snags Iranian of the Day Honors

Hey, when your competition is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, it's not all that tough to secure Iranian of the Day honors, right? The only way Nasim Pedrad wasn't going to grab the honor on the eve of her first SNL appearance was if someone discovered that she had built a secret nuke facility in her apartment in Irvine, CA.

In any case, Iranian.com was definitely rooting for Pedrad and was rightfully proud of her. Here's an excerpt from their comments:

The late-night American comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live wasn’t joking when it signed on an Iran-born female cast member today. Nasim Pedrad will need to grow into her role on Saturday Night Live if she hopes to replace ~~these~~ Casey Wilson.

Apparently, I'm the only person who was sorry to see Casey Wilson go. I liked her. Maybe a little too much.

But I feel more than compensated by the addition of Nasim Pedrad to the cast.

Tonight was her first appearance. As one would guess, she didn't have a chance to do much. I'm sure that will change and that she'll do a superb job!
